Pearl Jewelry - The Story of Pearl Hunters

As long as pearl jewelry have been known to people, they have been a highly sought commodity for their beauty. It's only in recent times however that the industry has taken the hunt for the perfect pearl to a whole different level. Today, the shiny orbs that we see on in display in jewelry stores have actually almost always been grown in farms.

That's a far cry from the dangerous extraction and collection methods used before the invention of modern technology. In the past, not more than 100 years ago, the only way to retrieve pearls was by diving in lakes, floods and the ocean to pick them up, one at the time. The unfortunate divers who'se job it was to do this, were often poor and lured by the relative large sums they could get. The diver would sometimes have to dive as deep as 100 feet on one single breath of air. In order to preserve air and to stay submerged the longest, the divers would hold on to heavy stones on the way down.

Naturally, this dangerous activity was reserved for the desperate or the powerless - in many cases slaves or extremely poor peasents. Today, this method is all but obsolete in most places of the world. The cheaper cultured pearls have become popular and are many times the only pearls available to the consumer.

There are however still a few isolated areas that practice this old art of pearl diving. Some of the finest natural pearl speciments come from the gulf of Bahrain. Here, divers still risk their health to retrieve what are considered the top of the crop in the world. In fact, Bahrain wants no part of the sale of cultured pearls, banned from trade. Bahrain is one of the few places on earth that does an active job in trying to preserve the natural habitat and waters from pollution.

It's an interesting story and one that continues to fascinate buyers around the world. Somehow, the beauty of the pearl grows when it's been retrieved from the depth of the ocean.

Buying Pearl Jewelry Without Being Ripped Off

Buying pearl jewelry can be fun, exciting and confusing. Whether you're considering a gift of pearl jewelry for someone special or as a treat for yourself, take some time to learn the terms used in the industry. Here's some information to help you get the best quality pearl jewelry for your money, whether you're shopping in a traditional brick and mortar store or online.

Pearls

Natural or real pearls are made by oysters and other mollusks. Cultured pearlsalso are grown by mollusks, but with human intervention; that is, an irritant introduced into the shells causes a pearl to grow. Imitation pearls are man-made with glass, plastic, or organic materials.

Because natural pearls are very rare, most pearls used in jewelry are either cultured or imitation pearls. Cultured pearls, because they are made by oysters or mollusks, usually are more expensive than imitation pears. A cultured pearl's value is largely based on its size, usually stated in millimeters, and the quality of its nacre coating, which give it luster. Jewelers should tell your if the pearls are cultured or imitation. Some black, bronze, gold, purple, blue and orange pearls, whether natural or cultured, occur that way in nature; some, however, are dyed through various processes. Jewelers should tell you whether the colored pearls are naturally colored, dyed or irradiated.

Clams, oysters, mussels and many other mollusks with limy shells are known to produce pearls. But very few kinds yield gem pearls of jeweler's quality. The pearl is an abnormal growth of mother-of-pearl, or nacre, imbedded in the soft bodies of these shellfish. It is built up, layer upon layer, in the same way as nacre is added to the lining of the growing shell and always has the same color and luster. For example, over the country, hundreds of good-sized pearls are found each year in the oysters we eat. Unfortunately these have no commercial value regardless of whether they have been cooked or not because they are dull opaque white or purple like the shell of the parent oyster. In recent times almost all pearls of gem quality come from the oriental pearl oyster which has a bright shimmering translucent nacre.

A pearl starts growing when some irritating foreign substance such as a sand grain, bit of mud, parasite or other object becomes lodged in the shell-producing gland called the mantle. Pearls formed in the soft flesh where nacre can be added on all sides are most likely to be spherical and the most highly prized. By far the great majority are flattened or variously distorted and have little value. Size, color, luster and freedom from flaws are other essential qualities. Unlike other gems, such as diamonds, pearls have an average life of only about 50 years. In time the small amount of water in a pearl's make-up is lost and its surface cracks. Because they are mostly lime, necklaces which are worn often are injured by the acid secretions of the human skin.

Territorial Army training ban lifted, but only for one night a m

The six-month training ban imposed on the Territorial Army to save £20million was partially lifted yesterday when the Government announced that the reserve troops could go to their drill hall for instruction pearl jewelry after all — for one night a month.

The decision, which will cost the Ministry of Defence £2.5million, was branded “pathetic” by a former Inspector-General of the TA.

Retired Lieutenant-General Sir Hew Pike, who commanded the 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment in the Falklands conflict in 1982, said one night a month would do nothing to persuade TA soldiers to stay in the reserves. “It’s a just sop to try and appease the Government’s critics,” he told The Times.

General Pike, who was Inspector General of the TA from 1995 to 1997, said many Territorials did not even go to their drill halls for training because they were too far away. “It’s only a couple of hours of training anyway. What’s absolutely essential for the TA is weekend training to keep up their skills. There won’t be a TA in a couple of years at this rate,” General Pike said.

The MoD confirmed that there would wholesale pearl jewelry be no weekend training for which TA soldiers would normally have received two days’ pay.

The freeze on all non-Afghanistan training to save £20million from the TA’s budget — revealed in The Times on October 10 — caused an uproar from Territorials and from Opposition MPs. The MoD insisted that the ban on training until next April would not affect the special predeployment training programme given to all TA soldiers mobilised for Afghanistan.

However, senior TA commanders told The freshwater pearl Times that the freeze would have a disastrous impact on the reserve force and that the short-term saving would persuade many of the part-time soldiers to leave.

“Allowing one night a month is pure cosmetics, it’s pathetic,” General Pike said.

EU figures such as José

Mr Miliband insisted it was in British interests that the former Prime Minister got the job: “The idea that Britain can be powerful in the world without being powerful in Europe is a joke.I want people around the world to listen to our ideas and to see that Britain is strong in Europe.”

Cecilia Malmstrom, Sweden’s Europe Minister, suggested that the Czech constitutional court was unlikely to give its freshwater pearl opinion on the Lisbon Treaty until after this week’s summit, meaning that it will be impossible for them to make a choice at that stage. Even so there is certain to be a debate about the remit of the post.

Asked whether she agreed with Mr Miliband’s view that the new president should be a big figure, she said that the Swedish government had not started formal consultations, since at the moment there was still no legal clarity. She added that all other countries, apart from the UK, were keeping their candidates close to their chests.

Some governments are questioning the wisdom of giving such a top role to an ex-Prime Minister from a country which is not part of the single currency, which has not joined the Schengen open borders system and which has a long history of euro-scepticism.

There are also Mr Blair’s controversial political decisions - not least joining Washington in going to war against Iraq, against the wishes of many European leaders.

But Mr Miliband countered: “This job (of European President) is about what this person can do for Europe in the future. Let’s stick to the future. We need someone who can be a powerful advocate (for Europe in the world), and committed to coalition building.”

Mr Miliband added: “The job is not a freshwater pearl jewelry prize or award. It is about what this person can do for Europe in the future. You appoint people on merit on the basis of what they can do.What do you want Europe to be in the future? Strong or weak? Who are the candidates? Who is the best candidate.”

So far Mr Blair has said nothing about the job and whether he even wants it. Officially, the president would chair high-level EU ministerial meetings but he is bound to want an international role — possibly sidelining senior EU figures such as José Manuel Barroso, the European Commission pearl necklace President.

Labour MPs join Tories in opposing ‘President Blair’

David Miliband took his “Blair for President” crusade to the heart of Europe last night as some Labour MPs joined the Conservatives in wholesale pearl earrings opposing the prospect of the former Prime Minister getting the job.

In Luxembourg for a meeting of pearl jewelry EU foreign ministers, the Foreign Secretary suggested that if they wanted a powerful Europe, Mr Blair was the man to lead it.

The Conservatives are privately raising Mr Blair’s likely appearance before the Iraq war inquiry as an additional reason for his unsuitability and derided Mr Miliband’s claim that he would be a “coalition builder.”

Mark Francois, the Shadow Europe Minister, said: “Tony Blair was a divisive figure in Britain and in Europe as Prime Minister. David Miliband’s claim that he was a great coalition builder shows how desperate Labour are becoming.”

Kate Hoey, the Labour MP for Vauxhall, said that she did not want “anyone to be president of Europe”.

Similarly, Ian Davidson, the Labour MP for Glasgow Southwest, said he still hoped for a referendum in Britain and that the position of president of Europe “will not be created”.

The appointment was not on the agenda for the meeting and will not be in the formal programme for the heads of government summit in Brussels on Thursday and Friday. But European leaders talk of little else, and Downing Street confirmed that Gordon Brown would be “completely supportive” if Mr Blair were to stand.

Some of the smaller EU nations, notably the Benelux countries, are against Mr Blair on the ground their interests might be pearl jewelry wholesale overridden.

But Mr Miliband told journalists that it was simply a question of what kind of Europe was wanted. “Unless Europe gets its act together, policymakers in Washington, Delhi, Rio de Janeiro, Moscow and Beijing and elsewhere are going to conclude that Europe is not ready to be the partner they want. Member states have to ask themselves if they want a powerful or a weak Europe. If they want to establish a strong European voice, then the question becomes, who are the candidates? It would be good for Britain and for Europe if Mr Blair was that man.”

Mappa teams comprise police

Maria Eagle, the Justice Minister, said that the risk of further crimes being committed by those supervised under the arrangements was “ever present” because they could display dangerous and pearl jewelry unpredictable behaviour.

Ms Eagle added: "That risk can never be eliminated entirely, but the majority of those subject to active Mappa management do not seriously re-offend due to robust and effective management. The number of those who re-offend seriously has remained around 0.5 per cent for the past 4 years."

The Justice Ministry has changed the basis on which the number of serious further offences committed by those under Mappa has been counted.

The 48 further serious offences compares with 79 recorded in 2007/08, but Justice Ministry officials said that those who had been charged with "wounding with intent to cause GBH" had been excluded from this year's figures.

In addition the total number of dangerous, violent and sexual offenders under the most intensive supervision are now being counted as a snapshot on March 31 each year rather than the total number monitored throughout the year.

The annual report shows that on March 31 2009, there were 898 dangerous offenders under the most intensive supervision and a pearl jewelry wholesale further 11,527 violent and sexual offenders under less intensive monitoring.

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said the figures should not be compared with last year.

“For the first time this year, the annual reports show how many Mappa-eligible offenders are in each area on a single day which is the 31 March; ie, a snapshot.

“Previously only the figure for registered sexual offenders was a snapshot; the data on the other two categories included all such offenders who had been included in those categories at some point over the course of the year.”

Harry Fletcher, assistant general secretary of the National Association of Probation Officers, said: “The Government has changed the way in which it collates statistics on violent offenders referred to Mappa. This could give the impression that there has been a reduction in numbers and therefore less threat to the public. In reality however the number of violent offenders has almost certainly increased.

“The Government claims it has changed the way it records in the interests of consistency. This may be the case but the effect has been total confusion and uncertainty about what the actual trends are."

Mappa teams comprise pearl necklace
police, prison, probation and other agencies including local council working together to assess an ex-prisoners risk and put in effect monitoring arrangements including the provision of hostel accommodation and police surveillance.

Crime figures row as 48 on probation are charged with serious of

Forty eight dangerous offenders being supervised by the police and the probation service last year were charged with murder, rape or another serious offence, according to figures published today.

Almost a further 1,500 dangerous pearl jewelry wholesale criminals being monitored in the community were sent back to prison for breaking the terms of their release from jail or breaching an order which bars sex offenders from a range of activities.

The figures also show that the number of people on the sex offender register rose by just under 1,000 to reach 32,000 last year.

But a row broke out after it emerged that the Ministry of Justice had changed the way the figures are compiled and published, making it impossible to compare the total number of violent and dangerous offenders supervised in 2008-9 with numbers for previous years.

Today’s figures are gathered from cultured pearl jewelry multi-agency public protection arrangements (Mappas), made up of police, probation, prison and other agencies, in each of the 42 probation areas of England and Wales.

In recent years a number of murders committed by convicted criminals under Mappa arrangements have undermined public confidence in the probation service.

Damien Hanson was under Mappa arrangements when he and an accomplice Elliot White murdered John Monckton at his home in Chelsea, London almost four years ago.

Anthony Rice, 48, was freed from jail pearl earrings nine months before he stabbed Naomi Bryant in her home in Winchester in August 2005. He was under Mappa arrangement but a probation inspection report found “substantial deficiencies" in his supervision by probation and other officials in Hampshire.

Maria Eagle, the Justice Minister, said that the risk of further crimes being committed by those supervised under the arrangements was “ever present” because they could display dangerous and unpredictable behaviour.
